What Does Our Driveway Paving Service Include?

Pro Pavement Services Ltd. offers comprehensive driveway paving services tailored to new construction projects, ongoing maintenance, and complete resurfacing or replacement.

Driveway Paving for New Construction

When constructing a new driveway the first step is to establish the desired grade and drainage. Next, an aggregate base course is placed to an average depth of 8” of ¾” gravel and compacted. Finally, a specifically designed asphalt mix is applied to present a finished surface based on the customer's needs. We use a durable HL3A hot mix design that offers more durability than the regular HL2A, HM3, and other driveway mix designs available.

Removal & Replacement (R&R) of Existing Asphalt

Over time, asphalt can deteriorate due to age, heavy use, or lack of maintenance. If a driveway reaches the end of its lifespan, our team will remove and replace the existing pavement. We ensure a stable foundation by verifying the 8-inch aggregate base, reusing existing gravel where possible, and reinforcing it as needed. A fresh asphalt layer is then applied, restoring your driveway to a smooth, durable, and visually appealing surface.

Proper Driveway Maintenance

After a new asphalt driveway has cured for approximately 6 months to a year, it can be sealed. You can take the DIY route with a contractor-grade sealant, or we can connect you with trusted professionals to do it for you. A good coal-tar emulsion sealer helps keep the sun from drying out the oils or binder from the asphalt and it also provides a watertight seal. Depending on usage and sun exposure, the sealer should be applied every 3 to 4 years. Maintenance is very important if you want to get the maximum lift out of your asphalt.

Our Six-Step Driveway Paving Process

  1. Site Audit & Proof-Rolling – Identify soft spots and verify a minimum 98 % Proctor density before we start.
  2. Excavation & Sub-Grade Prep – Remove failed asphalt, grade for a 2 % slope, and install geotextile on weak soils.
  3. Granular-A Base Installation (200 mm) – Two lifts, laser-graded, compacted to 98 % Proctor for freeze–thaw durability.
  4. Hot-Mix Delivery & Lay-Down – HL-3A asphalt placed at 145–155 °C in a single 50 mm (or 65 mm heavy-duty) lift.
  5. Dual-Drum Vibratory Compaction – Target 92–95 % mat density—confirmed by nuclear gauge—and hand-tamp edges.
  6. Finish, Joint Seal & Clean-Up – Seal garage tie-ins, broom sweep, and provide a written maintenance plan.

Signs You Need a New Driveway

  • Alligator cracking (interconnected fatigue cracks).
  • Edge raveling where asphalt crumbles away from lawns or walkways.
  • Base heave or frost bumps causing uneven slabs.
  • Persistent puddles or poor drainage after rain.
  • Multiple potholes or patches that re-open each winter.
  • Severe fading or oxidation (grey, brittle surface).

If you tick more than two of these boxes, a full asphalt driveway replacement or overlay is usually more cost-effective than spot repairs.

Transparent Pricing & Warranty Value

We believe in no-surprise quotes. While the final price depends on your driveway size and base conditions, our estimates always include:

What Determines the Driveway Paving Price?

  • Square Footage: Larger driveways typically have a lower cost-per-square-foot.
  • Base Prep: The amount of new Granular-A gravel required to stabilize the ground.
  • Excavation: The depth of existing material that needs to be removed.
  • Material: Choosing between Standard HL3A or Heavy-Duty thickness (65mm).

1-Year Warranty Included, we don't just pave and leave. Your new driveway includes a full 1-Year Workmanship Warranty. This covers any defects in paving or settling caused by installation, giving you total peace of mind through your first full cycle of Canadian seasons.

Benefits of Hot Mix Asphalt for Driveway Paving

Hot mix asphalt is engineered for Canadian winters. Its flexibility allows it to expand and contract during freezing and thawing without snapping, unlike rigid concrete.

  • Exceptional Durability: Resists frost heaving and salt damage.
  • Smooth Surface: Provides a sleek, dark appearance that melts snow faster in winter.
  • Cost-Effective: Significantly more affordable to install and repair than concrete or pavers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new asphalt driveway cost?

While every property is unique, a standard residential driveway installation typically ranges between $2,500 and $4,800. This price includes full excavation, base preparation, and hot-mix paving. We provide a guaranteed, itemized price in writing after your free site visit.

What kind of warranty do you offer?

We stand behind our craftsmanship with a comprehensive 1-Year Workmanship Warranty. This protects you against significant settling, pooling, or paving defects during the first full year of freeze-thaw cycles.

How long does the paving process take?

Most residential projects are completed in 1 to 2 days. We typically excavate and install the gravel base on Day 1, let it settle, and return to lay the hot asphalt on Day 2. You can usually drive on your new driveway 3–4 days after paving.

Do I need a permit to pave my driveway?

If you are simply replacing an existing driveway, permits are generally not required in Hamilton or Burlington. However, if you plan to widen your driveway or cut the curb, a permit is often needed. We can help guide you through this process.
