ACHIEVING AN EXPOSED AGGREGATE FINISH

An exposed aggregate finish is obtained by placing concrete and then removing the top layer or "skin" to reveal the stones beneath. There are a variety of ways to get to this result but the two techniques which are most common are brushing and washing, and chemical retarders.

EXPOSED AGGREGATE HAS ITS ADVANTAGES

Homeowners looking for an affordable and attractive decorative surface will find a friend in exposed aggregates. Cost and appearance aren't the only reasons to choose exposed aggregates though:

  • The colour and texture variations are only limited by your imagination
  • The skid-resistant surface is rugged and holds up well under high traffic and bad weather
  • It's highly versatile and contrasts well with plain, coloured or decorative concrete
  • It's low maintenance – occasional sealing and cleaning are required

BRUSHING AND WASHING

This method doesn't require any special tools or chemical retarders—just good timing. When the concrete is in place, the aggregate is exposed by spraying water on the surface and brushing away the mortar until the desired depth is reached. Generally, the surface mortar should not be removed to a depth past one-third of the diameter of the aggregate. The process should start as soon as the surface mortar is ready to be removed.

SURFACE RETARDER

For large jobs like driveways and pool decks many contractors use surface retarders after placing the concrete. They delay the time the concrete takes to set allowing the workers more time to start scrubbing and washing.

SEALING AND PROTECTING EXPOSED AGGREGATE

A transparent sealer goes a long way when it comes to keeping your exposed aggregate looking great for years to come. You can pick them up at most hardware stores and apply them easily using a brush, short-nap roller or airless sprayer. Sealants protect the aggregate from spalling, stains, freeze-thaw cycles, deicing salts and abrasion.
