ASPHALT PAVING – SERVICES

New construction is the building of new asphalt surfaces. First, excavation and grading of the area are performed as necessary to establish desired grade and drainage. Next, an aggregate base course is placed to an average depth of 8” of ¾” gravel and compacted. Finally, a specifically designed asphalt mix is applied to present a finished surface based on the customer’s needs. We use a HL3A hot mix asphalt design for driveways which offers more durability, than the regular HL2A, HM3, and driveway mix designs available, which have a high sand content and smaller size aggregates.

Removal and Replacement (R&R) of Existing Asphalt: Deterioration of asphalt can occur as a result of lack of maintenance, overuse, or simply living past its life expectancy. In such cases, old asphalt pavement may need to be removed and replaced. In this case an aggregate base course is ensured by checking that the existing base course has a minimum average depth of 8” of ¾” gravel, using existing where possible, and adding as required. After final grading the base coarse is duly compacted. Finally, a specifically designed asphalt mix is applied to present a finished surface based on the customer’s needs. We use a HL3A hot mix asphalt design for driveways which offers more durability, than the regular HL2A, HM3, and driveway mix designs available, which have a high sand content and smaller size aggregates.

Overlay or Re-surface:

In some instances, it is possible to refurbish a lot. A new layer of asphalt is applied over the existing asphalt surface.

Proper maintenance of an Asphalt Driveway:

After a new asphalt driveway has cured for approximately 6 months to a year, it can be sealed. You can apply a contractor grade seal coat material yourself fairly easily or hire us or another contractor. A good coal-tar emulsion sealer helps keep the sun from drying out the oils or binder from the asphalt and also helps seal water out. Depending on usage and sun exposure sealer should be applied every 3 to 4 years. Maintenance is very important if you want to receive the full life of the asphalt.

Beware of “Gypsy”contractors:

Every summer there are companies that come from out of town and they usually go door to door with “just enough” asphalt for your driveway. Do not be pressured into having work done because they are offering you a “bargain”. That “bargain” may cost extra in the future.

Just What is Hot Mix Asphalt?

It’s an engineered mixture of aggregate, or stones and sand, with liquid asphalt cement, a petroleum product. Varying sizes of aggregates are heated, then mixed, in exact proportions, with asphalt cement that has been liquefied at about 300 degrees. While the mixture is still hot, it is delivered to your driveway and paved on top of a base or sub-grade that has already been previously prepared. Very soon after paving, the mixture cools and hardens and you can drive on it right away.
